Glamour, danger and pioneering spirit are not words commonly associated with the air travel industry today, but for a time in the early 20th century, aviation truly captivated the global imagination.
Inspired by this spirit and the groundbreaking voyages of Vimy WWI-era bomber planes, Peter McMillan and Lang Kidby undertook the challenge of re-building a Vickers Vimy and re-creating three flights that ushered it into the history books: the first England-to- Australia flight (1919); first transatlantic crossing (1919); and first England-to-South Africa flight (1920).
The Vimy Expeditions is a large format, 256-page hardbound work of art authored by McMillan which retells the story of the Vimy and its past and present voyages. The book features 450 full-colour photographs of the Vimy’s modern journeys taken by top National Geographic photographers, along with many sepia-toned archive images of the original flights and their brave pilots. McMillan’s captivating text allows the reader to witness the highs and lows of his adventures in the Vimy, from the joy of cruising over the Taj Mahal, to the aftermath of a crash landing on Sumatra. His tale interweaves the historic and modern Vimy flights, separated by 90 years but united in a common spirit of adventure.
